Yoon couldn't be happier when an older girl asks her to jump rope. But the girl practically demands Yoon's jade bracelet in exchange, and she comes close to losing it for good. Yoon's immigrant experience particularizes her, but her predicament is universal, and the satisfying resolution is well earned. Thickly painted and vividly colored illustrations heighten the narrative's rocky emotional landscape.

A boy and his grandfather engage in conversation about the Golden Rule after they see it posted on a billboard. The straightforward but sometimes repetitive text keeps the discussion on a level understandable for children but can't entirely avoid the didacticism inherent in the subject. Evocative paintings (some from startling angles) incorporate imagery from various religious traditions, underscoring the rule's universality.
