Children explore caves for pirate gold and help rescue stranded ships, and sailors cry out "avast" and "aye, aye, sir!" Tenggren's illustrations offer enough fearsome pirates and spooky skulls to satisfy pirate fans.

(3) PS Illustrated by Gustaf Tenggren. A perpetually hungry lion who terrorizes the other animals is finally sated by a family of convivial rabbits who feed him delicious carrot stew. The bold, cheery illustrations, action-filled story (with its lively cadence and nice use of repetition), and large type should make this edition appealing to a new generation of young children.

This "poky little puppy" and his four naughty littermates who disobey their mother and dig holes under the fence, thus forfeiting their desserts, will provoke cries of delight from grownups who remember the Little Golden Book (now in a bigger trim size) and the softly colored, offbeat drawings. The simple, ageless morality tale hasn't lost its appeal for modern children, either.

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Gustaf Tenggren & Gustaf Tenggren. This new edition with a laudatory introduction by Mary Pope Osborne re-introduces Tenggren to a new audience. His illustrations resemble Persian miniatures, with their graceful women, handsome men, jewel-like tones, and intricate patterns. This volume presents eleven stories, including the frame story of Scheherazade, and the well-known tales about Aladdin, Ali Baba, and Sinbad.
