(3) 4-6 Illustrated by James Watts. Curry has carefully researched and sensitively retold tales from fourteen Native American nations. Attractive pencil drawings enhance the stories, which were originally told to explain physical phenomena and events and to teach lessons of discipline and self-respect. Included are brief notes on the Indian nations and source notes for the twenty-six tales.

The history and culture of the Southeastern indigenous peoples have been infrequently conveyed in children's books, but these twenty-seven stories are familiar as well as new. Curry provides a quick history of each of the sixteen peoples with whom the stories originated. Readers will find enticing images and bits of mystery in this felicitous collection, and many storytellers will find at least one new story for their repertoires.

Illustrated with sketchy line drawings, the brief selections include a creation myth, trickster tales, and animal stories both amusing and insightful. The collection concludes with cogent facts about the various Algonquian groups and information on each story's origins.
