Frustrated and angry that her father is too busy working to play with her, Emily creates a ravenous snow dinosaur in her backyard. Grizzle grows as Emily feeds her more and more and more. When Dad finally comes outside, Emily must save him from Grizzle. The text is wordy and purposeful, but the illustrations effectively convey Emily's shifting emotions.

Peter, whose mother has left (or is dead), has a dreamlike visit from a motherly snow leopard and two tigers. He asks them questions such as "Why do people have to go away?" The leopard's ministrations and the chance to say a previously unsaid goodbye offer comfort in this mysterious, even perplexing, story. The illustrations are engaging, though the animal figures are sometimes awkward.

When her grandfather tries to tame a stray cat, Jessica tells him, "You can't rush a cat." With patience and love, Jessica and her grandfather gradually win the little cat over, and by the last day of Jessica's visit, the cat comes and sits in her lap. Gentle tempera paintings with hints of the hiding cat complement the quiet story.

When his family moves out west, a boy explains the change to his dog as they drive across the country. They camp out in the woods, in a snowstorm, and in the mountains, all the while watching the moon that seems to follow them. The somewhat sentimental story is accompanied by realistic illustrations.

Upon hearing that the rain is caused by the "Old Man... snoring," Little Girl takes out the ladder and makes a journey to the clouds to give the giant there some old-fashioned cold care. The self-consciously precious text is overwritten, but the well-defined illustrations (showing Little Girl's mixed-race family and the pets that accompany her up the ladder) improve on the whimsical tone.

Although the book ends with a fairy story, most of the volume consists of "facts" about the Wee People, such as the materials they use for clothing, the food they like to eat, and descriptions of the magical powers they wield. Guidelines for fairy watching are included as well. Much of the lighthearted text serves as captions for the fanciful illustrations, with arrows pointing to the details described.
