English version by Rosalma Zubizarreta. This illustrated version of the well-known traditional Spanish nursery rhyme "Diez perritos" provides a great opportunity for bilingual storytimes. Lively contemporary-set pictures put the playful pups front and center; there's even a list of the breeds at the end. This is a perfect example of what publishers should be doing for the bilingual/Spanish-language market.

Contrary to her fantasies, orphan Carlota's terrific new parents don't turn out to be pastry chefs, pirates, etc., but they do bring her yummy pastries and pretend to dig for buried treasure. The light-handedness of the storytelling belies the book's depth, and the domestic scenes of Carlota and her new family are as wondrous as the scenes she imagined.

Little Bear, hardly more than a toddler himself, thinks having a baby sister is a pain. She requires all his mother's attention and knocks over his blocks. However, when his sister disappears while he is babysitting, he realizes how much he loves her. The fuzzy round bears in the pastel illustrations add warmth to the too predictable story.

After hibernating in a damp cave, Papa and Mama Bear begin building a cozy new cabin. They are too busy to pay attention to Little Bear, so he goes looking for someone who does. Finally, he meets another bear cub and they play happily together. Soft illustrations warm the tale.
