This picture book biography follows the Democratic Party icon from her Texas childhood (and a stint in San Diego during WWII), to marriage and motherhood, to her entrance on the national stage. Ultimately elected to Texas's highest state office, Richards stayed true to her commitment to civil rights and progressive values. With a folksy, conversational tone, Browne's informative text acknowledges challenges but mostly focuses on successes. Whitt's painterly illustrations emphasize Richards's open and inclusive nature. A two-page author's note includes four black-and-white photos, discusses Richards's alcoholism and divorce, adds context for her accomplishments, and clarifies her legacy. Selected sources are included.

Simple rhyming text complains about summer camp (until the final complaint about having to leave). Digital illustrations full of smiles make it clear that the chores, mud, and enforced singing bring more joy than pain. The text could apply to any summer camp, though Stars of David and other images in the illustrations suggest that this is a Jewish setting.

Looking at his pregnant mother, a little chimpanzee doubts that there really is "a baby in there," but he goes along with the preparations--building the baby a nest, throwing his mother a shower--just in case. The bold and bright jungle-colored double-page spread illustrations are chaotic and unfocused but congenial.
