The antelope-like chiru of northern Tibet were hunted nearly to extinction for their soft wool. Wildlife champion George Schaller hoped to save the chiru by protecting their birthing ground--but first he had to find it. Martin's account, brief and dramatic, is nicely amplified in Wingerter's art, evoking Tibet's windswept plains and peaks in rosy sunset colors and twilight blues. Bib.

When a prince marries the woman of his dreams, a master sailor, they lead a thrilling life together but long for something more: a child. This sentimental paean to family life is illustrated with luminous, romantic paintings; the gold color especially leaps off the page. The rhythm of the rhyming text is rocky in some places and singsongy in others.

Proficiently written folktales about talking horses who save their riders and outwit their foes form this collection, each story introduced by a blurb about horse breeds in the story's country of origin. Lush acrylic paintings make the breeds seem rather homogenous, as are the tales, despite their different backgrounds. Notes in the back of the book offer sources.

In this magical, image-rich text, shy Isabel has two anchors in her life: her sea captain grandfather, who dowses, and her best friend, a pig. When things go wrong and the Pig of the Pig gets lost, Isabel convinces Grandfather not to give up on his water gift, which finds lost animals as well as water. Brush strokes in the folksy art's thick underpainting show through the nostalgic acrylic glaze of a coastal idyll.

Seeger's lullaby, illustrated with dreamy acrylics, evokes the cozy companionship of a parent singing a baby to sleep. The text runs long for a picture book aimed at the littlest lap sitters, but the art, featuring images from nature and different cultures, reinforces the paradoxically personal yet universal quality of lyrics such as "One drop of water in the sea,...One little you, one little me." A musical score is included.

When it comes time for his daughter to marry, the sultan allows Aziza to devise a test: her husband-to-be must answer her riddle correctly. After many suitors fail the test, a farmer, who shares Aziza's love of numbers, provides the right answer. Nicely complementing the text are Wingerter's delicate illustrations, which subtly incorporate patterns on textiles, walls, and flooring. An explanation of Aziza's riddle is appended.
