(4) K-3 Illustrated by Mary O'Keefe Young. Monkey George and the man with the yellow hat go to a bookstore where George meets his favorite author and helps with a book signing. Of course, the curious monkey gets into trouble but comes out on top. Like the story, the illustrations, done "in the style of H. A. Rey," fit the formula precisely.

(4) K-3 Illustrated by Mary O'Keefe Young. Written by Monica Perez. George the monkey is afraid of going to the dentist. When, however, he sees an even more frightened child, he cheers the child up--and creates chaos. In the process he discovers the dentist isn't scary after all. George's romp, in this didactic and predictable story, is accompanied by cheerful watercolor and colored-pencil illustrations reminiscent of H. A. Rey's originals.

These books offer basic descriptions of the three religious holidays in a beginning reader format with stiff illustrations in subdued colors. Hanukkah gives a detailed account of the historical significance of the holiday, while Ramadan focuses on the events of each day from morning prayer to the evening celebration. (4) K-3 On My Own History series. Illustrated by Mary O'Keefe Young. This easy-to-read account of William and Ellen Craft's escape from slavery is simply told yet informative. Light-skinned Ellen disguises herself as a white man, and her husband pretends to be her slave. They travel from Georgia to Philadelphia and freedom. Though awkwardly rendered, the color illustrations help to clarify the text. An afterword and timeline are appended. Bib.

(4) 4-6 Creative Minds Biography series. Illustrated by Mary O'Keefe Young. An early Massachusetts feminist and abolitionist, Lydia Maria Child wrote novels and edited newspapers dedicated to swaying public opinion against slavery. This introductory biography presents her life in unadorned prose, although many of her emotions and states of mind are not attributed to a source. Simple black-and-white pencil drawings illustrate the volume. Bib., ind.
