Alternating cut-paper-like tableaux show the different preoccupations of two people who wear stripes--his are horizontal, hers vertical--that reflect their respective interests. In an homage to the René Maltête photograph that inspired this mind-expanding concept book, a final illustration presents them with the inevitable product of their union: a checkered-shirt-wearing child.

Simple, thought-provoking sentences are illustrated with the starkest of visual metaphors--e.g., an open window appears above "You are free to be loved," a shaded window above "Or not." There isn't a single person depicted in these pages, making this noteworthy book's stirring humanity all the more impressive.
