Lasky shadows arachnologist Greta Binford as she investigates Loxosceles spiders. The text attentively explains the research in absorbing detail, clearly showing how each piece of data provides evidence for the species' migration and evolution. This care extends to the numerous photographs and diagrams that portray Binford's meticulous research techniques, the spiders themselves, and the people who find them fascinating. Websites. Bib., glos., ind.

This book features the plight of a group of endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtles whose journey from Mexican beaches to the nutrient-rich Sargasso Sea goes awry when they are caught up in the Gulf Stream and deposited in the cold bays of New England. Color photos and compelling text document the rescue of one turtle as it is handed off from volunteer beach patrollers and eventually flown to Florida for release.

Readers are taken on board the Atlantis, an oceanographic research vessel. The text describes daily shipboard duties, tells about the crew's mission to study hydrothermal vents, and details an ocean floor visit by the submersible Alvin. Illustrated with color photos (too few from the Alvin dive), this overview makes a sound introduction to the subject matter. Bib., glos., ind.

Published spring 1998. This book follows Alison Jolly, a primatologist, as she and her assistants study a troop of lemurs. While the text overly anthropomorphizes its subjects and lacks a strong connection with the unlabeled photographs, the close-up color photos create a sense of intrigue about lemurs and their everyday activities.
