Young Inventors Guild series.
Five precocious children from all over the world, ranging in age from six to thirteen, find themselves on a farm in rural Ohio guarded by men wearing black. The kids are told that their parents--all brilliant scientists--are busy working on an important project. After weeks of captivity, the children attempt to escape and save their parents. Well-developed characters enhance this readable story.

During the summer of 1975, seventeen-year-old Grace Barnett becomes embroiled in several personal crises that threaten to tear her family apart. Despite coming from "a long line of storytellers," Grace's delivery is rather flat; an overabundance of water metaphors also weighs down the story. Goetsch's evocation of a rural Virginia setting is otherwise well rendered.

To avoid punishment for vandalism, Taylor's coerced into pitching for her high school baseball team. Recapturing her love for the game, Taylor forges new relationships with her best friend and her surly father. Such trite observations as "the game of life is hard, but that's also what makes it great" mar the writing, though there's some exciting baseball action.

Carl and his brother, Adam, are Polish Catholics living in Portland. After Adam is suspected of stealing, the boys are confronted with the city's anti-Catholic sentiment and the KKK. Set against the backdrop of 1922's Oregon School Question, the story provides an intriguing look into history. Though Carl's endless introspection slows the plot, readers will care about him and his brother.
