Foreword by Robert Lewis. When Sparrow injures his wing and can't fly south for the winter, he asks trees for shelter, but only Pine offers his branches. In reward, the Creator grants Pine the gift of staying green while other trees must lose their leaves in winter. Though the pourquoi nature of this Native American folktale isn't quite fleshed out, the delicate illustrations of trees and birds are lovely.

Introduction by Joseph Bruchac. In this revised and updated edition of Lone Bull's Horse Raid, a fourteen-year-old Oglala Sioux boy describes his participation in a horse-stealing raid against the Crow. Along with a new introduction, a detailed author's note provides "background for an understanding of the significance and excitement of such raids" (from Horn Book Magazine review). Goble's dynamic illustrations have been re-scanned from the original artwork. Bib.

This is a very simple introduction to the role of prayer in many world religions. The vividly colored illustrations often include more interesting details than the bare-bones text; informative notes on major religions and on the illustrations flesh out the presentation. This volume will be useful for comparative religion studies (though there's no mention that many people choose not to pray).

Demi retells the story of the Hindu figure Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu sent to Earth to overpower demon kings. Mixed-media illustrations, saturated with gold and jewel tones and surrounded by intricate frames, are the highlight here. The measured text is less colorful although still engaging and faithful to its source material.

In austere yet vivid prose, a fictional fifteen-year-old Sioux participant tells of the tragic battle. Linking the personal narrative are objective explanatory passages providing historical and military details. Brilliant stylized pictures, full of color and movement, are influenced by Plains Indians illustrative art. This revised and updated edition of Goble's first book includes a new author's introduction. Reading list. Bib.
