Atinuke returns for a fourth time (Too Small Tola, rev. 3/21, and sequels) to her diminutive, high-spirited, mathematically gifted protagonist's "run-down block of apartments in the megacity of Lagos, in the country of Nigeria," with its close-knit and quirky neighbors. Much happens in the three brief chapters, with Iwu's energetic, expressive black-and-white illustrations visually grounding readers in the setting and its culture while highlighting key story details. As Tola and her sister and brother readjust to living with Grandmommy after "the virus" had separated the family, Tola worries about elderly neighbor Mrs. Shaky-Shaky, isolated on the building's top floor, and observes tensions between Grandmommy and Tola's brother over his new friends. A beach day with Grandmommy prompts Tola to feel gratitude for all she has. Finally, she triumphs over accusations of dishonesty and learns lessons in accountability and forgiveness. Throughout, Atinuke lends specificity to her Nigerian setting through references, word choices, and dialogue capturing precise pronunciations and turns of phrase. "For true," such attention to culturally situated details will prove just as valuable to readers as the core values communicated by these big-hearted stories about a small Nigerian girl.

(1) 1-3 Illustrated by Emily Hughes. Fans of Atinuke's beloved chapter-book series know that Anna Hibiscus "lives in Africa. Amazing Africa" and Too-Small Tola "lives in Lagos, unbelievable Lagos." Now we meet protagonist Beti, who lives with her mother, father, and baby brother in a "little round house in the green woods under the mountains," with no running water or cellphones but with friendly farm animals and close friends and good neighbors nearby. In four brief sections, each set during a different season, readers follow this lively child's small-scale adventures. The book opens in spring, on Beti's birthday, with party preparations, including helping Mam bake a cake and then foraging for flowers to decorate it ("and pick some salad too!" says her father). She refuses to wear a party dress; her friends arrive; her birthday gift is...unexpected, as is her reaction to it. Beti is a classic Atinuke protagonist, with her age-appropriate highs and lows; her individuality and three-dimensionality; her moods, mischief, and creative problem-solving. The setting is painted through homey, specific details in the text and in Hughes's (illustrator of the Charlie & Mouse early readers, among others) frequent spry, eye-pleasing illustrations, a mix of black-and-white and color, spot art and full-bleed section openers. Atinuke's introductory note describes living in Wales in "a roundhouse built of straw and clay in the woods. It was a life of magic, and of mud," both on display in this engaging and memorable chapter book.

(1) 1-3 Henry series. Illustrated by Mika Song. In his second early-chapter-book outing (Henry, like Always, rev. 3/23), Henry -- a sensitive child who presents as being on the autism spectrum -- is ambivalent about a field trip to the natural history museum. "Henry was excited. Everyone in Classroom Ten would ride the bus to the museum. Henry was also worried. Everyone in Classroom Ten would ride the bus to the museum." Despite his concerns, Henry is looking forward to the dinosaur exhibit. When Samuel's dad (a field trip helper) asks Henry's group of three what they'd like to see, "'Dinosaurs!' said Henry. But he forgot to say it out loud." Each of his attempts to make his voice heard is inadvertently thwarted, and Henry patiently accompanies his group to the rock, bug, and mummy displays. Song's loosely rendered, limited-palette watercolor and ink illustrations telegraph emotion and deepen meaning for newly independent readers. When Henry eventually shouts "DINOSAURS!" the accompanying illustration makes clear his frustration, along with his classmates' bemused reactions. They finally find the dinosaur room (after getting a bit lost), and Henry's absolute joy is palpable. Bailey's relatable characters, familiar scenarios, and gentle humor make this a remarkably satisfying read...whether you embrace the new or not.

(2) 1-3 Illustrated by Sophie Blackall. Stella and Marigold, ages seven and four, are a force to be reckoned with. In eight tightly constructed, linked short stories, we follow the sisters through a domestic plumbing disaster, a visit to the zoo, events at school and preschool, and the construction and maintenance of a close sibling bond. Barrows and Blackall jointly inhabit that authentic childhood territory where the universal ordinary intersects with the specific odd. Stella has the flu. Her mother brings her apple juice. "Stella was surprised at how bad it tasted. It tasted like throat." The text tells us that as Marigold grows up, Stella explains the world to her. The accompanying illustration shows what some of those explanations might involve -- pickles, a jump rope, money, infinity, and more. The stories echo and resonate with one another. The fireplace tiles mentioned in passing in the second story? We finally get to see them near book's end. The theme here is storytelling, and the book is a little subversive in the best children's literature tradition, celebrating the thrill of fibbing even as it ostensibly warns against it. Barrows and Blackall walk this tightrope with skill, cheekiness, and palpable pleasure, their tightly interdependent approach to narrative mirroring the supportive and loving relationship of their two stalwart protagonists.

(2) 1-3 Illustrated by Carmen Mok. Orris the rat lives a quiet, reclusive life nestled in the wall of an abandoned barn. He papers his hideaway with stories from discarded books, tends to his treasures (a slipper, a marble, a sardine can emblazoned with a jaunty, crown-wearing fish), and carefully avoids danger. When a young owl finds himself snagged in a mousetrap outside of Orris's door, the rat is faced with a moral dilemma: help the predator, risking that his favor may be repaid with violence, or ignore the owl's clear suffering from the safety of his own nest. This test of character sits at the center of an intimate, fully illustrated early chapter book. As the story is a clear variation on Aesop's "The Lion and the Mouse," the moral option may seem obvious, but DiCamillo's artful use of spare and telling detail along with Mok's attention to visual perspective in her atmospheric art give weight to the rat's decision. Orris's face-off with his admired sardine can's offbeat branding insisting that consumers "make the good and noble choice!!" adds levity. While Orris works to release the trap, a nimbly narrated conversation sets a tentative friendship in motion between Timble, an awkward, good-intentioned lover of stories, and Orris, a grumpy, lonely collector of tales. This is a tender, carefully drawn opening to a promising character-driven series.

The burrow- and tree-dwellers are enjoying a new sense of peace and unity since the events chronicled in The Remarkable Rescue at Milkweed Meadow (rev. 9/23), and our protagonist, rabbit Butternut, feels secure in her status as the community storyteller. Then a troupe of thespian turkeys rolls into the forest to stage a production, and everyone except Butternut is cast, which sends her into a crisis of confidence and a case of writer's block. Alongside this, Butternut's brother reveals her secret fledgling friendship with one of the humans in the nearby house to the rest of the creatures, and Butternut's status falls even further, leading her to make a false accusation and deceive her loved ones. This early chapter book continues the first installment's focus on the natural world and precise ("quartz peastone"), vivid ("pugnacious fighters") vocabulary that is challenging but digestible, thanks to strong foreshadowing, a tight plot, lovable characters, and Salati's enchanting illustrations. After Butternut's lies are exposed, she struggles to get her friends and family to listen to her when she discovers a mortal threat to them all. Learning how to both command and cede attention is a challenge to which many children can relate, and Dimopoulos's blend of anthropomorphism and respect for the natural world makes this a winning example to follow.

(1) 1-3 Translated by Celyn Harding-Jones. When four animals discover an egg while playing in the forest one day, they decide to take turns caring for it. At Mouse's house, the egg begins to talk, and Mouse must figure out how to keep it warm. The next day, at Bear's house, the egg hatches, producing a yellow chick. Little Bird discovers what foods she likes while at Hare's house. And at Turtle's house, Little Bird learns how to use her imagination. With the knowledge she's gained from her new friends, an industrious Little Bird builds her own house. Though the others are at first surprised and worried for her, when they visit they discover that Little Bird, who now wishes to be called Clara, is quite an independent thinker, leading them to reconsider what their names could be ("Nico?" "Marcel?" "Lola?" "Winnie?"). Seven easily digestible sections, a picture-book trim size, and graphic novel like format (straightforward panels, dialogue balloons) make Dubuc's satisfying hybrid story a perfect match for both reading novices and slightly younger listeners. She gives each animal unique attributes (e.g., Bear is a creative builder and likes to exercise: "An active body for an active brain"), and her appealing pastel-toned ink, watercolor, and colored-pencil illustrations contain lots of recurring details that are entertaining to spot on repeat reads. Hand this to fans of Ruzzier's Fox + Chick series.

(2) 1-3 Bat, Cat & Rat series. Illustrated by Mark Teague. These delightful, very brief stories entertainingly touch on the joys and complexities of friendship. In chapter one, Bat, Cat, and Rat move into a new house together. Each character is distinct: Cat is serious, Rat is mischievous, and Bat is clever. Cat takes the upstairs and pulls books from a suitcase. Rat gets the downstairs and unpacks a satchel of joke props. When Bat declares, "UNDER the stairs is THE BEST!" the friends all end up hanging out in Bat's snug closet. In the second chapter, Rat plays a joke, scaring Cat with a rubber spider. But Bat turns the tables and plays an even bigger joke on Rat. Using only a handful of basic words and repetition, Dyckman creates an inventive, warm text filled with humor. Teague magnifies that humor even further with his trademark cartoonlike drawings rendered in acrylics. The big, bold illustrations capture expressions of joy, anger, contentment, and camaraderie. Young readers will enjoy the stories and discover that a home with friends, even with its ups and downs, is a cozy place to be.

(1) 1-3 Sal Miller is six. Her life is changing so much that she tells Papa, "I'm not Sal anymore," after her two-year-old sister, Poppy, moves into her bedroom. Sal "was a person who had a room of her own, and I -- whoever I am -- don't." When she gets a new haircut, she wonders, "If she looked different, would she feel different? Was she still Sal?" The start of first grade has been Sal's big excitement of the summer, but when she and best friend Griffen are placed in different classes and he starts to make other friends, where does that leave Sal? "She'd thought Griff was a true friend, and now, she realized he was, in fact, a true enemy." In this fourth installment of the series (most recently Oh, Sal, rev. 9/22), Henkes again navigates the vicissitudes of his young protagonist's life with warmth, humor, and utmost respect. Though this is primarily Sal's story, with her father there to hug, guide, and reassure her, all characters, including Mama, Poppy, and older brother Billy, are well drawn, with their own parts to play in this narrative about a loving family where true affection is palpable in every scene. With gentle support from parents and teachers, Sal comes to understand that her life might change, but she is still Sal.

(2) 1-3 This comic for newly independent readers introduces Quin, the titular unlucky kid, in three short stories. In the first, Quin heads to the beach, where he bikes off a dune, is attacked by gulls, trips on a fence, and is hit by a rogue wave. Despite his penchant for plotting and creating detailed diagrams before taking action, this is how things go for Quin in the other stories as well: one in which he ropes his sister into a scheme to pull out his loose tooth (a dog, a cat, and a kite are involved) and another in which he goes fishing with his friend Jose (watch out for hornets). Holt draws his characters with exaggerated features -- huge heads, googly eyes, and prominent noses contrasted with sticklike arms and legs -- signaling and supporting the goofy tone. He controls the pace by varying the number and size of the panels on each page, guiding the narrative in and out of chaos. Quin's disaffected cat, Kitty, provides wry commentary throughout ("This kid is going to need a lot more protection than that"; "Great is not the word I would use"), adding to the humor. Quin's affable, can-do attitude in the face of his plans continually going sideways will win him fans.

(2) 1-3 Monti the mole has a morning routine: go the bakery, stop at the library, and then rest on his favorite rock beside the river. One day, his routine is interrupted when he hears whispers about a stranger in town -- and then he finds the stranger on his rock. This beginning-reader comic is for children gaining confidence and fluency. It's told in five short chapters with twenty to thirty words per page; multisyllabic words like stranger, favorite, and talent are repeated throughout the text, giving opportunities to practice them. The stranger turns out to be Leo, a long-snouted green creature; and, of course, he and Monti become fast friends. Kantorovitz presents a fresh angle on friendship, though: Leo has been experiencing some suspicion and hostility since he arrived in town, and Monti makes it his goal to show everyone how amazing Leo is. The digital illustrations mix bold lines and pastel colors to pleasing effect, and Kantorovitz varies the number of panels on each page to control the pace, building small moments of drama and breakthroughs and leading up to a talent show Monti and Leo stage to bring the town together. This cozy book feels both familiar and surprising, and it will likely be embraced by young comics fans.

(2) 1-3 Illustrated by Scott Nash. Best friends Bunny and Clyde learn that it can be hard to be bad in this early chapter book. The rabbit and chipmunk duo are tired of being good and decide to put their energy into being bad, but each of their misdeeds ends up aiding the intended victim in comically unintentional ways. In one instance, Bunny and Clyde toilet paper a neighbor's rose bushes, which, it turns out, protects the flowers from an unexpected frost. Never ones to give up, the two move on to more and more daring attempts at villainy, all of which lead to disappointment. McDonald's short chapters, simple sentences, and snappy dialogue are perfect for newly emerging readers looking to take their first steps beyond early readers. Nash's frequent full- and partial-page black-and-white illustrations (final art not seen) provide lots of breaks in the text and ably capture the hijinks of these two fundamentally goodhearted critters. Bunny and Clyde can't help but fail to live up to their infamous namesakes.

(3) 1-3 In this accessible and enjoyable graphic novel, Thunder always aims to be a good pack member to human Sage, but a wolf ancestor appears and tries to convince her to find her “wolfitude.” This includes hunting for rodents, barking loudly, and running away. Readers will enjoy spending time with goodhearted Thunder and imaginative, understanding Sage. Digital ink and watercolor panel illustrations are filled with dog logic and funny details including a “wagometer” and “Pack Manners” breakdowns. Back matter includes “More InFURmation” about dogs and dog behaviors.

(2) 1-3 Detective Sweet Pea series. When Parkville's prized Golden Chew Bone goes missing, the town's quirky enclave of animal residents is sent into a tailspin. Sweet Pea, a blue-gray dog with a strong sense of smell, reluctantly accepts the case; after all, "without the Golden Chew Bone, there will be cavities!" More artist, herbalist, and local historian than detective, Sweet Pea enlists several friends to scour the town for clues and culprits. A side story regarding the past triumphs and tribulations of Sweet Pea's great-aunt (depicted in old-timey sepia) provides inspiration for tackling the present-day mystery. Suspicious behaviors, mild grudges, and biases (e.g., diurnal versus nocturnal animals) all serve as effective red herrings, leading to a satisfyingly zany conclusion. The chunky ink lines, vibrant colors, helpful emanata (motion lines, arrows, teardrops, sound effects, etc.), and organic dialogue of Varon's signature cartooning all contribute to a pleasurable, seamless reading experience. The mostly three-tiered, horizontal-panel layouts result in a swiftly paced story; while periodic single- and double-page splashes are chock-full of detail, regularly punctuating key dramatic moments. A clever, fourth wall-breaking coda features a cartoon Varon introducing readers to the real-life pets that inspired the story's characters (photographs included). The final pages of the book present Sweet Pea with several new mysteries to solve, to which the newly crowned detective of Parkville responds with an enthusiastic, "Let's go!"

(2) 1-3 Illustrated by A. N. Kang. Back for a third adventure (Starla Jean, rev. 3/21; Starla Jean Takes the Cake), our ­heroine and her chicken, Opal Egg, have a mystery to solve. Starla Jean (who now considers herself a "chicken-everything expert") summarizes key points from the ­previous titles as she shares her chicken knowledge along with topics of expertise found among her family and neighbors (e.g., "Mr. Marcos, whose house is near the park, is an expert gardener. His dog, Dean, is great at digging holes"). By chapter two, the plot moves forward as Starla Jean, with baby sister Willa in a wagon unsuccessfully tries to leash Opal Egg for a walk, but Opal Egg insists on walking untethered. The chicken leads them to a mystery when she unearths a yellow bead while looking for snails. As with her chicken-care tactics, Starla Jean's attempts to solve the mystery include a litany of tangents, wacky observations, and wrong turns, ­allowing both readers and Opal Egg to stay one step ahead. With each newly discovered clue, a neighbor joins the pursuit, and eventually this merry crew finds a rainbow of lost beads and their original owner too. Colorful spot art on every page adds information and comedy to the narrative and, along with Starla Jean's penchant for lists and repetition, helps keep the story accessible for new readers.

(1) 1-3 Illustrated by Mika Song. Henry, a boy on the autism spectrum (first introduced in the 2019 picture book A Friend for Henry, rev. 5/19), likes everything about school. Life in Classroom Ten is entirely predictable. Mrs. Tanaka posts the schedule for the week, and Henry can count on ­having Music on Wednesdays, Free Choice every Thursday, and Share Time on Fridays. So when Mrs. Tanaka announces that the class will hold a special parade on the upcoming Friday in place of Share Time, Henry responds with dismay. All week, Henry objects, but to no avail. On the big day, Henry hands his teacher his Quiet Card and enters the classroom closet to regroup. There, he encounters classmate Samuel, who is unhappy about the parade for a different reason. Henry finds a solution to Samuel's discomfort, a way to keep Friday as a time to share, and a comfortable place for himself in the parade. The ending of this short chapter book, heavily illustrated and with a format and content to appeal to new readers, is as satisfying as Bailey's understanding prose and Song's gentle, friendly illustrations. Henry is an extremely sympathetic hero--relatable and authentic. His open face expresses anxiety, calm, distress, or delight with just small changes to his eyebrows or mouth. Readers will recognize Henry as a child who succeeds in adjusting to what is, for him, an enormous challenge.

(2) 1-3 The First Cat in Space series. Illustrated by Shawn Harris. Following The First Cat in Space Ate Pizza (rev. 7/22) is an elaborate and emotionally sincere graphic novel that fortunately retains much of the oddball absurdity of its predecessor. This space-Western whodunit sees the return of the series' heroic trio: stoic First Cat, courageous Moon Queen, and reputable robot Loz 4000; however, the friend group finds itself fractured due to the pint-sized droid's self-assigned exile for an honest mistake. After the queen's soup is mysteriously poisoned, she has only twenty-four hours to obtain lifesaving "golden glumpfoozles" (a.k.a. yellow apples). Joined by First Cat, Her Majesty's episodic lunar adventure is rife with near-constant twists, danger, and subterfuge. Loz 4000 faces peril as well, including unjust imprisonment with a baby pirate, but it's through this relationship that Loz learns to overcome feelings of self-doubt to be the hero that the story needs. Thoughtful plotting, revealing flashbacks, and strong continuity result in a remarkably cogent caper that improves upon re-reading. Harris's lively pencil and charcoal cartooning perfectly pairs with the humorous storytelling and at times experiments with unconventional panel layouts, green monochrome monitor imagery, and expressive shifts in digital color to effectually convey mood, meaning, and setting. Extras include First Cat Fan Club info and a one-page comic announcement: "There's going to be a book 3!"

(2) 1-3 Narwhal and Jelly Book series. Excited Narwhal can't decide which costume to wear for Halloween, while scared Jelly doesn't plan to participate. But when Jelly and their friends must "superfy" themselves to bravely rescue Narwhal from a "humongously hungry" sea monster (i.e., Narwhal in too many costume com[cf2boonations), that gives Narwhal the perfect costume idea for their Narwhalloween party...featuring waffles, of course. Humorous puns abound; the varied panel structure and dynamic character expressions in this graphic novel for transitional readers help build age-appropriate suspense. This entertaining eighth series entry includes three "story chapters" plus facts about potentially scary real-life creatures and a "Super Waffle, Strawberry Sidekick and the Bat Attack" comic interlude.

(2) 1-3 Illustrated by Doug Salati. "Bird affairs are not rabbit affairs," says Butternut's mother. But when the young rabbit meets Piper, an outgoing and adventurous fledgling robin, she starts connecting with other animals in Milkweed Meadow and finding the world less frightening. Butternut directly addresses readers, dropping carrots of wisdom about story structure and life. "Life-and-death stakes might enhance a story, but they were terrifying to live through." The animal characters are anthropomorphized, but they retain core species characteristics and behaviors; some readers may even recognize the dynamics of wildlife interactions around the bird feeder near Butternut's den. Salati's (Hot Dogp, rev. 11/22) textured black-and-white illustrations mirror this blend of realism and fantasy. The animals' faces are expressive, but they look like animals, especially in their body language. When Butternut has to decide whether or not to risk her safety to attempt the rescue she's been foreshadowing since the first sentence of chapter one, no one will be surprised. But how it happens is "a wood-gnawing climax," as Butternut's grandmother would say. This chapter book has a relatively rare and welcome level of depth, and the strong narrative voice, ecological awareness, and themes around the value of connection and community will call to many readers.

(2) 1-3 Bear and Bird are the best of friends. In four stories, the pair navigates misunderstandings and hurt feelings, always managing to remember how much they value each other so they can turn a difficult situation into a happy one. In one story, Bear forgets to pack picnic supplies but can't admit it. He distracts his friend with "The Wobble Song" and an invitation to eat yummy leaves instead of picnic fare. Bird knows Bear forgot, but saves Bear's feelings by going along with the adjusted plan. In another chapter, Bird shows Bear how to paint en plein air. She is then crushed because local animals admire Bear's picture but not her own. Bird's jealousy shows up as anger, but this time Bear saves Bird's dignity by asking to hang Bird's painting on his wall. Jarvis skillfully writes about small adventures and emotional upheavals of childhood. With thick outlines, friendly curved shapes, and touches of humor, loose, cheerful digital illustrations on almost every page make the book approachable. Jarvis's short chapter book will be welcome for readers moving on from Cordell's Cornbread and Poppy but not quite ready for Barrows's Ivy and Bean series.
