Lottridge recounts thirty-five incidents from the four Gospels, collating them into a single chronology and providing citations to chapter and verse. The narration is straightforward, with dialogue close to the biblical text; Lottridge has added descriptions of the action, in the manner of movie novelizations. The full-page art is eclectic in its visual references and various in its treatment. Attractive, accessible, and nonsectarian.

Many well-known tales from the Hebrew Bible, including stories about Abraham and Isaac, Moses, and Esther, are included in this collection. The stories retain a straightforward power that serves them well, and each references the Bible passages it originates from. Some of the rough, sketchy drawings verge on caricatures, but others have an endearing homely quality.

This reissue is a collection of folktales by a seasoned storyteller. Lottridge took tales from all over the world and recast them simply enough for three- and four-year-olds to enjoy. They have a lovely rhythm, and Fitzgerald's pastel watercolors enhance the text without overwhelming it.

After a sultan takes a diamond button from a rooster with prodigious swallowing power, the rooster must use his talents in unusual ways to outwit the greedy sultan and get the button back. Elegant watercolors set the story in the time of the Ottoman Empire. A note about the story gives some additional information about this Hungarian tale.
