Seventh-grader Pia has many worries: her older brother's schizophrenia, her mother's new boyfriend, the drifting away of her best friend, and a search for her Italian father. As the story progresses, Pia meets her father overseas and gains an understanding of her own quiet strength. Russo avoids easy solutions, but the ending is nonetheless romanticized.
