Held back in sophomore English again, seventeen-year-old Tim tries desperately to get ahead of the many challenges he faces: a learning disability; an alcoholic father; and the threat of failure only compounded by day-to-day trials of black, working-class life in Newark. Visceral dialogue and characters' moving vulnerabilities are slightly undercut by overwritten narration.
