Peppered with homespun Midwestern colloquialisms and rhythmic repetitions, Root's text begs to be read aloud. Parkins's paintings show small, wiry Aunt Nancy and big, bleary Cousin Lazybones with humorously exaggerated but realistically recognizable facial expressions.
