After her father dies saving her life in a fire, seventeen-year-old Eleanor must also cope with disfiguring scars, a new neighborhood, and economic hardship. It's 1944, and her spirits are buoyed by a correspondence with a soldier--until he requests a photo of her. Although it suffers from strained similes and metaphors and too many tearful scenes, this is overall a rich, deftly crafted tale.
