Butterflies and Lizards, Beryl and Me

(4) 4-6 In 1936 Missouri, Charley moves to the country with her mother, who works long hours at a cannery to support them. Derided by the cannery owner's children, Charley nevertheless finds friends in Don the storekeeper, Walt the hobo, and especially elderly Beryl, whose reputation for craziness is belied by her kindness to Charley. Though the plot and some characters are rather predictable, the story is adeptly told.
