Set in fourth-century Britain, this compelling story centers on Alexios Flavius Aquila, a young Roman commander sent to the empire's northernmost British outpost. The hardened troops have little use for their new commander, and Alexios has to earn their respect. Sutcliff is peerless at depicting her characters' internal struggles and never flinches from showing that good and evil are not absolutes.
