Annie, a British kindergartner who reads Shakespeare and stock reports, is a source of irritation and embarrassment to her older brother. In a quietly eerie narrative, Jack learns that his little sister has an imaginary playmate whom Annie claims is a time traveler from the future. The plot's ambiguities are nicely handled in a debut novel that makes us empathize with Jack's frustration and understand Annie's loneliness.
