Goodlow Pryce needs to be saved from the Swamp Queen, and twelve-year-old Gnat Stokes aims to do it--even though she's technically not his one true love. This Appalachian story based on "Tam Lin" is rich in colloquial language and characters, but the jumpy narrative (in which we find out that the Swamp Queen is Gnat's mother) is sometimes confusing.
