While the text is the traditional Christmas song, the illustrations show Benjamin Bear wooing his beloved Bedelia with dozens and dozens of gifts. Cutaways of Bedelia's house reveal how she copes with all the presents, finally creating a special Christmas fair with them on the fold-out last page. While the illustrations have many amusing details, Benjamin and Bedelia's story is sometimes hard to follow.
