Homesteading: Settling America's Heartland

(3) 4-6 Photographs by William Muñoz. Seven short chapters describe the grueling daily life of those who settled the prairies after the 1862 Homestead Act. Topics covered include building a soddy and planting, harvesting, and storing crops. The color photographs--many of which are of cleaned-up museum pieces or houses--may not accurately portray homesteading life, but the text clearly conveys the hard work done by homestead families.
