"Spiritual advisor" Madame Caterina and her daughter Annie move to Peach Hill, where Annie poses as feeble-minded to listen in on conversations. After meeting Sammy Sloane, though, Annie is eager to abandon her life as a grifter. Annie's strong voice creates a character with enough gumption, skepticism, and wry humor to resist, ultimately, her mother's narcissistic influence.
