Illustrated by
Lucy Eldridge.
When colt Red Badger is born, a boy helps her stand for the first time. Simple, sensory text incorporates small details to give a horse's-eye view as Red Badger grows and is sold to a rodeo. Naturalistic, angular watercolors with plenty of white space add buoyancy, although the ending (boy and horse are momentarily reunited at a bucking bronco event) is rather abrupt and unsatisfying.
