Mace, the first woman to graduate from South Carolina's historic military college, the Citadel, records the rigorous physical and mental pressures of "knob" (freshman) life. Though her often tear-filled recollections sometimes have a slick "as told to" quality, the memoir provides a vividly detailed picture of life at the Citadel, made unique because it is presented from a female perspective.
