Sheldon enthusiastically highlights naturalist William Beebe's contributions to scientific exploration and interpretation. His work included observation of animals in their natural habitats and later conservation efforts. His invention, with Otis Barton, of the bathysphere is detailed, and his writing--both scientific and popular--is noted, with some samples.
