Twelve-year-old runaway Arthur becomes the unwilling caretaker of a polar bear, a gift from Norway's King Haakon IV to England's King Henry III. Based on historical records of a "pale bear" in a Tower of London menagerie in the 1250s, this adventure has inherent dramatic interest, but its first-person voice relies heavily on descriptive narration, giving it a sedate tone and pace.
