While this is foremost the story of Isabel's recovery from her mother's suicide, the novel--a series of brief vignettes, inspired by the author's childhood years in Guam--brings to life the people around Isabel as well. The family's loss is palpable, but Holt provides breathing space for her readers through numerous engaging subplots and her depiction of the beautiful village of Malesso.
