A straightforward though dry text chronicles the life of L. M. Montgomery (called Maud as a child); sporadic quotes from Montgomery help liven things up. The gentleness of the illustrations is pleasantly spiced by humorous details, such as Montgomery's angry face as she pulls a pie out of the oven: "Maud worked hard at housework when she really wanted to be writing."
