On the way to market, Celeste wants to hurry, but Mama wants to talk to the neighbors. When a neighbor comes by with a puppy, however, Celeste is the one wanting to stop and talk. Although the situation is too slim to hang a story on, the ritually chanted text moves well and the brightly hued gouache paintings open a folk-art window on a multiracial metropolis.
