The "monsters" turn out to be human children who ultimately mistake icky broccoli crowns for yummy maple trees--and find that they love the stuff. The too-obvious denouement reflects wishful thinking on adults' part, but it's dressed in terrific gouache art that resembles cut-paper collage.
