The story is somewhat slow getting out of the starting gate, but it picks up momentum as ten-year-old Pat learns to ride, finds a favorite horse, and saves the mare from an untimely end. Mrs. Mack, Pat's riding teacher, is a strong character--the amalgam of many knowledgeable horsewomen who devote their lives to children and horses. Polacco's illustrations show the close friendship between girl and horse.
