Blue-tinted photographs echo the sense of reverence and mystery in these excerpts from Thoreau's journals. The excerpts themselves vary in subject and tone, from descriptions of the natural world to more abstract philosophical musings. Although its usefulness is somewhat limited, the book as a whole gives young readers a sense of the range and the depth of Thoreau's thought.
