(3) 4-6 Feeling that he's a disappointment to his father, fourteen-year-old Thrasher leaves home and joins the Confederate army. The novel effectively describes historical military life and the soldiers that Thrasher comes to know. Two events, at opposite ends of the emotional spectrum, are highlights: an impromptu baseball game between the Yankees and Confederates, and an unflinching portrait of the battle at Gaines' Mill, where Thrasher is wounded.
