Sixth-grader Antonia feels she doesn't have anything in common with her family and believes her parents hate her. To cope, she hides her feelings behind elaborate lies. A teacher sees Ant's fabrications for what they are and helps her make some important changes. Readers will root for this realistic heroine even as she makes mistake after mistake. The ending, if a bit of wishful thinking, is satisfying in this funny, painful first novel.
