While all the ducks dutifully learn to quack, Buddy wants to woof, which leads to teasing and isolation. But when Buddy’s quirky sounds help to scare away a cat and protect the flock, the other ducks learn that being “a bit odd” can be great. The moral is clearly communicated, if predictable. Textured illustrations highlight the animals’ personalities. The somewhat lengthy story features some repeated words in bold (mostly animal sounds), which makes this more suitable for older preschoolers.
