This book is a cross between an entertaining ship's log and a scientific guide to marine life. Arnosky details a boat trip he and his wife took through the Florida Keys to study the U.S.'s only living coral reef. Along the way, he explains the reef's structure and describes and illustrates in undersea shades the fish and other creatures.
