Twelve-year-old Cassie (Moving Target) and Asher, her Guardian, hunt through present-day Italy for the Spear of Destiny. Cassie, now bound to the spear and haunted by apocalyptic visions, is dead-set on fixing the future herself, even though riddles and codes hint at another way to "release destiny." Thought-provoking themes (e.g., free will versus determinism) get less attention than action sequences.
