Twelve-year-old Cassie is dismayed to be spending the summer with her dad in rural Texas. She repeatedly makes assumptions about those around her based on appearances. Unsurprisingly, she overcomes her prejudices, makes new friends, learns to appreciate nature, and realizes there's more to life than the mall. Despite the formulaic clichés, this is an agreeable story with a little mystery thrown in.
