Composed of two linked novels, this volume chronicles the friendship between sixth-grade pen pals Sophie (in New York) and Katie (in California). The girls meet individual challenges involving such trials as family problems, jealousy, and personal responsibility. Though it can be telling to read about events from both girls' perspectives, the letters too often merely rehash the stories already recounted.
