Since she's something of a black sheep at the Centre for Neo-Historical Studies, no one is more surprised than Joss when the new student, a Chorian alien, chooses her to be his partner in the time-traveling program. But someone seems determined to keep the pair from making their jump and will stop at nothing to prevent them. Joss's acerbic narration and the well-realized setting are a good match for the detective-story plot.
