Snakes' adaptations to deserts, forests, and the sea are matter-of-factly described, along with features unique to poisonous and nonpoisonous species. Although the snakes in the paintings are identified on the last page, the repetitive illustrations ornament the text rather than extend it. A final paragraph reminds readers that "all animals, including snakes, have a place in nature."
