Having survived the premature birth his twin didn't, fifteen-year-old Keegan blames himself for the family's breaking apart. He believes that by taking his own life he'll redeem himself, and the novel spans his countdown to suicide. However, as Keegan creates a place on the wrestling team (which he joined for the punishing pain), he finds the other strengths he needs. His transformation is small enough to be realistic yet big enough to save his life.
