Starboy: Inspired by the Life and Lyrics of David Bowie

(2) K-3 "For as long as David could remember, he'd felt like a stranger on his own planet." This fictionalized account of Bowie's childhood features a somber boy struggling to figure out where he fits in at home and at school. "He felt connected to the universe and the rhythm of the stars," and on one magical night, he hears "star chatter" in the music coming out of his radio. Gigot's imaginative illustrations move from muted grays to bright pinks and purples. There are nods to some of Bowie's most well-known songs; in one spread, young David appears as many of his personas and roles: "His imagination ran wild. He was a pirate, a duke, an astronaut, a goblin king." An author's note provides the facts of Bowie's childhood, and a bulleted list offers information about Bowie's career and accomplishments.
