Stonecutter

(2) 4-6 This haunting novel, set in 1835 New York State, is written as a journal. Albion Straight, fourteen-year-old apprentice stonecutter, reluctantly accepts a commission from the mysterious John Good to create carvings for his unbuilt mansion. But Good is possessed by a dream; the mansion, a maze of unfinished possibilities; Albion's task, a nightmarish commitment. The denouement is all of a piece with the gothic events that precede it.
