Suddenly in the Depths of the Forest

(2) 4-6 Translated by Sondra Silverston. Oz's lyrical allegory concerns a gloomy village from which all animals fled so long ago that only adults remember them. The adults are evasive, but Matti and his friend Maya believe they've seen a fish. The book's first half is atmospheric; it then turns more specific (and didactic). Though not perfect, it's a thoughtful, provocative tale rooted in real historical troubles.
