Wyse and Unwyse are human and fairy towns tenuously linked by magical mirrors. Meeting through a supposedly "dead" mirror, orphan Ava and magic-less fairy Howell become guardians of a prophetic book. Meanwhile in Unwyse, Mr. Bones wants the book; Mr. Skinner in Wyse wants more dead mirrors restored. Believably childlike protagonists invest this magical mystery (set in 1852 England) with emotional heft.
