This alternate history portrays Scotland in the early 1900s teetering toward a European war. Caught in the struggle is fifteen-year-old Sophie, a boarding school student skilled in explosives and spiritualism who finds herself playing a dangerous role in her country's fate. Sophie's world doesn't feel quite grounded or developed enough to be convincing; an appended author's note provides some clarification.
